Movied with This Book. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Nov 12, Greta rated it liked it. I had expected a dry sociological tome, but it was more interesting than I had expected. The authors conducted self-reporting surveys of many young people, men and women, black, white, and Jewish, who describe their strongest reactions to movies, how they influenced them, etc.
Contains many descriptions of women talking about how they loved Valentino and John Gilbert, people describing their fright at Phantom of the Opera, Dr. Hyde and, especially the Gorilla, and how they cried I had expected a dry sociological tome, but it was more interesting than I had expected. Many amusing stories of how people tried to imitate what they saw in the films, unfortunately some stars names are censored out–though perhaps they were self-censored in the original reports.
More disturbing were several reports of people learning to fear Chinese men from films. At least Birth of a Nation cut both ways. As so often in later studies, the authors are unable to trace actual behavior changes to the influence of films, so those who assume films are causing a generation of delinquents were doubtless dissatisfied with the report.
